Don’t you hate it when:
You just bought a new skin care product that cost you an arm and a leg, and it doesn’t even work for your skin…or worse, cause an allergic reaction or break you out? Yikes! It’s happened to me so many times, and I bet it’s happened to you too!
It turns out, Kiehl’s has a Try Before You Buy campaign, which gives you FREE skincare samples that are personalised to your skin. All you have to do is walk into any Kiehl’s stores (worldwide!) and get a complimentary skin consultation. Then, they’ll recommend products based on your results and give you free skincare samples catered to your skin concerns – no purchase required! This way, you can Try Before You Buy and save the $$$ in case it doesn’t work out.
How cool is that?!
Healthier Skin in 28 Days
Like free skincare samples weren’t enough, Kiehl’s also has a “Healthier Skin in 28 Days” guarantee.
You might be thinking:
That’s what every brand says! But is it true? I’ve tested out 4 Kiehl’s products and I’ll be sharing my 28 Day to Healthier Skin journey with you.
Before we get on to that, I’ve tried out their Ultra Facial Oil-Free range 2 years ago, which worked amazingly for my combination skin. You can read my review on the Ultra Facial Oil-Free range, and see me describe a product as “nice” (I really don’t like to use the word “nice” anymore lol) here.
My Skin Consultation + Recommended Products
After getting my complimentary skin consultation done, it showed that I have combination skin – oily at my t-zone and super dry at my cheek area. I also told them my skin concerns which are: dark circles, redness, and dull skin.
I got a ton of product recommendations and samples, but today I’ll only be talking about 4 Kiehl’s products that they’ve generously sent through, after using them for 28 days.
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil
If you’re thinking: cleansing oil and oily skin? Doesn’t seem like a good match…so was I! I voiced my concern and they told me not to worry because this Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil is suitable for all skin types…
I’m not much of a fan when it comes to products that are labelled as “For All Skin Types”. I can’t wrap my head around how it’s possible. I think it’s safe to say I was pretty skeptical while trying this out. Any product that is too oily/rich that I’ve tried didn’t work. So I was convinced this was going to break me out.
Boy, was I wrong!
It’s a very lightweight oil that does not feel greasy at all. This product is enriched with a blend of pure botanical oils. The blend consists of squalane, which is a plant-derived lipid with a natural affinity for skin, Evening Primrose Oil, which is rich in Omega-6 Fatty Acids, and Lavender Essential Oil.
Want to know the best part?
It smells freaking amazing! Oh, and it’s soap-free, sulfate-free, and is free of mineral oil.
Not only does it smell amazing, it takes off every little bit of makeup on my face. Taking one pump of the cleansing oil on a cotton pad, I press it over my eyelids for 10 seconds, and then remove my eye makeup as usual. It cuts the time I usually take to remove my 23218 coats of waterproof mascara to 1/3 of the time! Then with 2-3 pumps of the product in my palm, I rub it all over my face.
With a little bit of water, the oil emulsifies into a cleansing milk and gently (but effectively!) lifts all traces of makeup and dirt off the skin. I’m then left with non-greasy(!!!), smooth, fresh-feeling, and bright skin.
I’m completely obsessed with this Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil. I’ll even go as far as to say it’s the best pre-cleanser I’ve ever tried – cleansing waters, oils, and balms included!
Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate
What a mouthful!
This Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate is Kiehl’s solution to dry, tired skin. Formulated with 15% plant-based Glycerin and Shiso Leaf Extract, it utilizes liquid-to-serum technology to intensively hydrate the deepest surface layers of the skin. It’s also marketed to plump skin, and also to help smooth fine lines and rough skin texture.
Does it work?
After cleansing and toning my skin, I apply one pump of product on my skin. One thing I really like is that it absorbs almost immediately! I especially like using this in the morning because it hydrates my skin and smoothes out any rough, dry patches. Because it has glycerin, it provides a good base for any makeup I put on afterward.
However, one thing I don’t like about this is the smell! It’s good because it’s completely fragrance-free, but it means there’s no pleasant smell to mask the weird, chemical scent. But it doesn’t linger though, so it’s not a big deal for me.
The bottom line is…
My skin gulps this Kiehl’s Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate up like me with a Starbucks Green Tea Frappe (with soy!) on a hot, summer day. Except it doesn’t smell as yummy as the Green Tea Frappe.
Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye
Anywhere I go to get a skin consultation done, the first thing I get is… “Are you a night owl?”, “Do you stay up late?”, or something along those lines.
I really don’t!
I was just naturally blessed with eyebags. There are pictures of a 5-year-old me with eyebags. I’ve come to appreciate them though because I just look weird without them now. Like an Alien species, especially with my long, vacuumed-out forehead.
With that said:
I don’t expect any eye care product to make my eyebags disappear. Unless it’s some sort of miracle cream made of unicorn tears. In that case, maybe. But I do get tiny wrinkles at the inner corner of my eyebags if they’re not hydrated, especially the right one for some reason. And I would like those wrinkles to please not exist.
Similar to the Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil, this Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Eye is enriched with Squalene, Evening Primrose Oil, and Lavender Essential Oil. It is also free of fragrance, parabens, mineral oils and silicones.
I use two drops – one for each eye, twice a day. The texture of the eye cream is very creamy and feels super luxurious on the skin. It doesn’t feel heavy and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling to the skin. It’s very hydrating, gets rid of my inner corner eyebag fine lines, and leaves my under eye area feeling smooth.
This is crazy:
It didn’t get rid of my eye bags, ’cause like I said that will take a miracle. But!! It actually brightened up my under eye area! My complexion actually looks much brighter and I look less tired now.
That’s two for two for the Midnight Recovery range!
Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA++++
Want to hear a secret?
I hate wearing sunscreen. Period. Does that make me a terrible beauty blogger? Probably. The sunscreens I’ve tried are usually very thick, and leave a greasy film on my skin which makeup slides right off of! That’s 413481 hours of effort, gone.
The Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA++++ is marketed as an ultra light and gentle formula and provides effective UVA and UVB broad-spectrum protection. It is also oil-free, fragrance-free, colorant-free, and non-comedogenic (yes, please!).
This sunscreen is very lightweight and doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin. However, it needs a couple of minutes to sink in or else makeup will still slide off! I usually do my whole skincare routine, put this on, and get changed before doing my makeup.
Honestly, that’s all I gotta say about a sunscreen.
I mean, it doesn’t feel greasy if you let it sink in for a few minutes, it’s very lightweight and doesn’t give a white cast to my face. That, to me, is all I need in a sunscreen.
So, did I get “Healthier Skin in 28 Days”?
I’d say so!
My skin is much brighter, hydrated, and feels as smooth as a baby’s butt. My undereye bags are visibly less dark, and my entire complexion looks much healthier. Which is what we want!
I really enjoy Kiehl’s products and I highly recommend them, especially the Midnight Recovery range. If you’re still skeptical, though, feel free to drop by your nearest Kiehl’s counter, and get your free skincare samples!
