Hi friends! I apologise that things have been a little slow on Beauty Nerd By Night lately. It’s that time of the semester again, where my caffeine levels are at an all-time-high… finals month! Things have been so monotonous around here lately: I wake up, I study, I sleep. I can’t wait till my finals are over, then it’ll be time for my long-awaited 3-month break! During that time, I have amazing news and tons of exciting things planned for you guys (there may or may not be a giveaway ;)) so keep your eyes peeled for that!
Like I said, this whole month has been so monotonous and tiring for me, but I did start trying out some Half Moon Eyes skincare products this month, so that’s exciting! The only product I’ve ever tried from Half Moon Eyes prior to this is their Pink Fruity Wash Off Mask, but I’ve always heard really good things about their Milky Jelly Toning Essence. So this month, I tried out the Experience Half Moon Eyes Set, and that’s what we’ll be talking about today!
I also tried out a different lighting approach to the photography in this post: I lit it with backlight instead. Let me know what you think of it! I’m not really sure how I feel about it.
I tried out the Experience Half Moon Eyes Set for about a month, courtesy of Althea, which includes their best-sellers – the Milky Jelly Toning Essence, the Milky Jelly Moisture Cream, and the Pink Fruity Wash Off Mask. This set retails for $26.50 (which is an amazing deal!). If you were to get each product individually, that’ll run you about $40. Half Moon Eyes (HME) is one of Korea’s top skincare brands that’s all about finding your own unique feature and bringing that out. These products have been the talk of the Korean beauty town for quite some time now, and the toner is known for creating a Korean beauty trend called “glass skin”. Intrigued? I sure was! Read on to find out! 🙂
What is Glass Skin?
The Glass Skin trend has been creating waves in the Korean beauty world! “Glass Skin” basically refers to a smooth and super hydrated complexion that has a gorgeous transparency and sheen to it (much like glass, hence the name). Glass Skin involves intense hydrating to achieve radiant, poreless and translucent skin which all help give a youthful glow to the skin. To achieve the glass skin look, you have to be mindful of what products you put on your skin. You can read more about the glass skin trend over on Althea’s blog.
The Half Moon Eyes products that I’ll be reviewing for you today is widely used to achieve the glass skin effect. The Glass Skin look, like I mentioned, is created by keeping your skin soft and hydrated. These products from Half Moon Eyes that I’ll be reviewing for you today are widely used to create Glass Skin.
Achieving the glass skin look is not an overnight thing, but you can definitely cheat it! There is something called the Seven Skins method, where you layer your toner seven times to achieve that glass skin glow. This works, but I guarantee your toner’s going to run out in no time lol! Because of this, I prefer to use just one layer (not cheat it!) and for a longer period of time to get a more long-lasting glow.
The consistency of this Milky Jelly Toning Essence is slightly more viscous than your regular toner. It is a 3-in-1 that contains the properties of a toner, booster and essence in one. This Milky Jelly Toning Essence is targeted towards hydrating the skin from within that works for dry and oily (and even sensitive) skin and controlling sebum production, all while having anti-aging and pore-care properties. It’s also great for lazy people (like me!) who want to follow the Korean 10-step skincare routine, but are too lazy because it combines three products in one – win!
The ingredients in this product include tea tree leaf water that helps to protect the skin, fig extracts that soothe the skin, alleviate skin irritation, and assists in the absorption of nutrients to give clear skin, and silica powder that removes pore wastes and dead skin. Not only that, it also contains pomegranate extract that has anti-aging properties and fights free radicals. Mulberry extract works to increase the collagen content while gingko nut is an anti-oxidant that also promotes blood circulation.
I apply it to the textured side of the cotton pad (a small box of cotton pad comes with each purchase of the toner) and swipe it over my skin to apply the product and remove any dead skin. Then, I flip the cotton pad over to the normal side and pat in the excess. When I first tried out this Half Moon Eyes Jelly Toning Essence, I won’t lie… I was like meh. But I continued using it for the past month and I’ve started to fall in love with it!
It has been really hot lately and applying this really helps to cool and soothe my irritated skin. After applying this, your skin will instantly have a gorgeous glow to it. If you apply the Seven Skins method, you will definitely get that Glass Skin look! Not only that, I’ve also noticed that my skin has been much smoother and brighter. Now my skin also has a very healthy glow to it! I won’t say it’s a glow that’s worthy of the “glass skin” name, but it’s still a very gorgeous and healthy-looking glow. My skin is much more moisturised than it’s ever been – my skin’s happy and it’s showing!
Moisture Cream. Yikes! If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, you know I’m not a huge fan of creams. My oily-combination skin just doesn’t get along with face creams. I break out when I use a face cream that is too rich on my skin so I tend to favour gel-type, oil-free moisturisers. The hot, humid 30C weather here also means that thick creams are very uncomfortable on the skin.
Since Glass Skin is all about keeping your skin hydrated, you need to use a good moisturiser! This Milky Jelly Moisture Cream is definitely a rich, intense moisturiser – perfect for the Glass Skin glow. It doesn’t feel too heavy or sticky on the skin, but there is a slight greasiness after you apply it and you can definitely feel it on your face. After letting it sit for around 10-15 minutes, the greasiness goes away though. Similar to the Milky Jelly Toning Essence, this product also includes their Oriental Beauty Fruits Newplex, which include Pomegranate, Gingko Nut, Mulberry and Fig.
After using this for about a month or so, I’m happy to say that it hasn’t broken me out. However, I have to say.. it’s not my favourite moisturiser. I feel like it’s a little bit too heavy for me just because I prefer something lightweight, like a gel. If you have dry skin though, this would be an amazing moisturiser for your face. Because it is super moisturising, I still use it at night before bed to keep my skin hydrated.
The one thing I have to say though, is that this does not smell pleasant (to me, at least haha). To me, it kind of smells like laundry detergent and that’s not a scent that I love putting on my face. The scent doesn’t linger though, so it doesn’t really bother me that much.
All in all, I would recommend this Milky Jelly Moisture Cream if you have dry skin. If you have combination or oily skin, I might skip out on this one 🙂
I’ve used this Half Moon Eyes Pink Fruity Wash Off Mask once before and I remember really liking it. This is an 8-in-1 mask that tightens pores, nourishes, moisturises, hydrates, and exfoliates the skin while providing texture care and sebum removal properties and giving a fresh, cooling effect to the skin. This mask contains dragonfruit, which helps to remove waste and excess oil from the skin. It also helps to deeply moisturise the skin. There are also dragonfruit capsules in the mask that help to gently exfoliate the skin.
One tiny pot (capsule? jar? help?) of this mask is more than enough to cover your face. I only used half to cover my entire face. They recommend spreading the leftover mask onto any areas you need a little pick me up on – this includes your chest, neck, arms, legs. But of course, me being me, I didn’t read the directions the first time I used it so I used all of it on my face and it ended up too thick and didn’t dry evenly (see picture below). By the way, this stuff smells amazing! They have a dragonfruit scent that is super fruity, which I love!
The mask is marketed to “immediately shrink pores” because of the strong oil-absorbing effect of the dragonfruit and cools the skin with the help of carbonated hot spring water. Not only that, there is also canola honey (from Jeju) in this mask that helps to nourish and hydrate the skin.
I’ve used up 3 of these masks and I’m really loving it! It takes a little bit of effort to wash off, but I LOVE how it makes my skin look and feel. My skin is much brighter and feels much smoother after taking this off. I also notice an immediate reduction in my pore size when I remove the mask.
Masks are the most talked about skincare products when it comes to getting your best skin! BUT, it’s also one of the steps that most people skip (myself included). Isn’t that weird? Like, we know it’s good for us, but we’re just like meh haha. To achieve the glass skin look though, you need to make sure you’re using a good mask. This Half Moon Eyes Pink Fruity Wash Off Mask is definitely the way to go! The mild exfoliating and pore-shrinnking properties help to keep your skin looking and feeling smooth, while the hydrating properties give you that glass-like glow.
Overall, my experience with Half Moon Eyes was amazing! I’m a huge huge huge fan of the toner and the face mask, and as for the moisture cream, I’d recommend it if you have dry skin. My skin definitely has gotten a healthy glow, but it doesn’t yet resemble glass. I’ll keep you posted in the coming months! These HME products that I’ve tried so far are really effective and they’re not too expensive too. If you want to try out these products, definitely pick up the Experience Half Moon Eyes Set from Althea.
