VDL Lumilayer Primer | For Radiant, Glowy Skin

TGIF, beauty nerds! Today we’re talking about one of the best-selling face primers in the Korean beauty world, the VDL Lumilayer Primer. Before we get started though, I have some exciting news! Beauty Nerd By Night has made it to Feedspot’s Top 75 Korean Beauty Blogs list – yay! Thank you guys for all the amazing support and for making that possible 🙂 I never really thought of Beauty Nerd By Night as a “Korean beauty blog” but we do discuss Korean beauty products A TON over here, don’t we? :p They’re just so dang good!

When I mentioned the VDL Lumilayer Primer in my 16 Korean Beauty Products You Need Right Now post, my bottle ran out. So for my Jolse collaboration this month, I decided to pick up a new bottle and do an in-depth review for you!

VDL Lumilayer Primer | For Radiant, Glowy Skin

    VDL Lumilayer Primer ($16/30ml)

The VDL Lumilayer Primer has luminous violet pigments that give one heck of a glow and brightens up the skin to give a 3-dimensional effect. The violet pigments help to brighten up any dullness while highlighting and giving the skin a voluminous look. The formula itself is very hydrating and creates a smooth base for flawless makeup application.

    Where to Buy:

Jolse (always comes with tons of free samples!)

    Amazon

    Sasa

    Althea

VDL Lumilayer Primer | For Radiant, Glowy Skin

Let us first take a moment and give this packaging the attention it deserves! Oh, btw, does anyone else use to love folding these paper stars? Lol okay, back to the topic at hand… The packaging of this primer is freaking beautiful. I think the bottle is made of glass. It feels like a cross between glass and plastic… only one way to find out but we’re not gonna do that :p But it does feel quite weighty so I’m going to go ahead and say that it’s glass! And not just any glass… it’s the best type – frosted glass!! When the light hits it at certain angles, there is a gorgeous violet shift. Best part? It comes with a pump!

VDL Lumilayer Primer | For Radiant, Glowy Skin VDL Lumilayer Primer | For Radiant, Glowy Skin

The formula of the primer itself is quite a thin consistency. One pump of this is more than enough for my entire face. It’s white when you first pump it out, but as you spread it out, you’ll start to see the violet particles in it. After spreading it across the skin, the violet pigments disperse and leaves the skin with a gorgeous bright, healthy glow. The product has a slight fragrance – it smells fresh and isn’t overpowering. It doesn’t linger, but it’s something to keep in mind if you’re very sensitive to fragrance.

This VDL Lumilayer primer is very hydrating and gets rid of any dry patches so that makeup goes on smoothly. It’s very lightweight and doesn’t feel greasy on the skin. It does leave a slight tackiness so that makeup can stick onto it well.

You can wear this product alone or under a foundation. It does have very tiny, and I mean miiiiicro shimmer that isn’t noticeable after you put a foundation over top. If you have dry skin and you want a healthy glow without putting on any other makeup, this is perfect worn alone! Since I have oily skin, I avoid wearing this alone because glow + oil isn’t the best combination. My personal favourite is to mix it in with a full-coverage or matte foundation and it just gives the perfect radiant finish. It makes my skin look flawless and super healthy! I have a post on “The Oily Girl’s Guide to Glowy Skin” where I show you some tips on how I get my skin to look glowy, but not greasy. This product works amazingly for that!

All in all, I think this VDL Lumilayer Primer is the BEST primer I’ve ever tried by far to get a radiant, glowy look to your skin. I have honestly never used a primer that gave my skin the sort of natural glowy, dewy, healthy gorgeousness (for lack of a better word heh) that this does! However, it definitely isn’t the longest lasting primer. If you are in need of something that will keep your makeup in place the entire day, I would layer a different primer underneath, like the Etude House Beauty Shot Blur primer (which I’ll be reviewing soon so keep your eyes peeled for that!).

LANEIGE Fresh Calming Toner & Morning Mask

Guys, I haven’t been this excited about a skincare line in a loooong time! Today we’re talking about two products from the LANEIGE Fresh Calming range – the LANEIGE Fresh Calming Toner and the LANEIGE Fresh Calming Morning Mask, but what’s a post written by me without some rambling first? :p

I definitely don’t say this enough, but I love living in Malaysia – the gorgeous places, the amazing people, and the food (guyysssss, the foooood). The one thing that I’m not a big fan of though, is the heat and the humidity. For someone who has very sensitive skin that’s prone to heat rashes on my face, I need to keep my skin hydrated and cool at all times. I would wake up and spend 12482 hours doing my makeup, walk outdoors for 30 minutes, and these red patches start flaring up. And let me tell you, they itch like a mother. Fast-forward 30 more minutes, I’ve scratched and rubbed all my makeup off and is walking around with a patchy red face.

There was a period of time, in May I think, that it got really bad. It even scared the lady doing my facial because once she took off my makeup, I was patchy everywhere lol. She thought I was having some severe allergic reaction to something she used. The only thing that worked to calm them down is to slather on a thick layer of Aloe Vera Gel and leave it on for an hour or so. This isn’t possible when I’m running errands, at class, or just anywhere other than home. I’ve flipped over every corner of the internet but nothing else seemed to work. I was on the verge of giving up when my prayers were answered by the skincare gods because LANEIGE dropped a new range that got rid of them for good.

Laneige Fresh Calming Toner & Morning Mask | The Best Skincare Range for Sensitive Skin

I sound like a walking ad because whenever a friend asks me for a skin care recommendation, I’d say the LANEIGE Fresh Calming range. It’s the perfect skincare range for anyone living in a hot, humid environment. Even if you don’t suffer from heat rash flare-ups, it soothes the skin and gives a cool, calming feeling. Not only that, it also hydrates your skin without feeling heavy or oily. Also, the LANEIGE Fresh Calming Morning Mask is the perfect morning moisturiser for anyone with oily/combination skin.

The LANEIGE Fresh Calming range is developed specially for combination skin, infused with their LANEIGE Skin EqualizingTM technology that soothes and moisturises the skin to regain healthy skin balance. This whole range aims to provide immediate moisturising and soothing effects for oily/combination skin that is dehydrated. Many times, our skin gets oily when it’s dehydrated because it produces more sebum to try to combat the dehydration. This LANEIGE Fresh Calming range is free of oil, animal ingredients, synthetic pigments, and triethanolamine. They are also hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested so they are suitable for even the most sensitive skin.

Laneige Fresh Calming Toner & Morning Mask | The Best Skincare Range for Sensitive Skin

The two key ingredients in the LANEIGE Fresh Calming line is Lychee and Deep Sea Water. Natural lychee extract helps soothe the skin and also remove skin irritants. Not only that, lychee skin contains polyphenol, which is a powerful antioxidant. The polyphenol helps to soothe not only the surface of the skin but from deep within the skin layers as well. Deep Sea Water, on the other hand, is used for its moisturising properties. Because Deep Sea Water is rich in minerals, it keeps the skin hydrated and nourished. It also has antioxidant effects and protects skin from harmful UV rays.

    Laneige Fresh Calming Toner

    LANEIGE Fresh Calming Toner (RM120/250ml)

The LANEIGE Fresh Calming Toner soothes and reinforces the skin’s moisture barrier. It balances the skin by maintaining the water to oil ratio. Can we first talk about that packaging? It’s not a big deal or anything but I freaking love the ombre effect and the transparent base! Also, at 250mls, it’s a pretty big bottle. I’ve been using it every morning for the past two months and I’ve barely used half the bottle.

I love using this in the morning because it cools and soothes my skin. It feels super refreshing in the morning, and it also has a fresh lychee scent that smells so amazing and wakes me up in the morning. I especially love this toner when it’s a little bit cold from sitting in my air-conditioned room overnight. It really helps to depuff my skin, making it look radiant and healthy.

    Laneige Fresh Calming Morning Mask

Laneige Fresh Calming Morning Mask Texture

LANEIGE Fresh Calming Morning Mask (RM115/80g)

This LANEIGE Fresh Calming Morning Mask is actually a moisturiser. Not just any moisturiser though, it is the best morning moisturiser ever. Most moisturisers I’ve tried are either too heavy for the morning time or leave a greasy layer on my skin that makes my makeup slide right off. The one thing I absolutely love about this product is that when you pump it out of the bottle, it is actually an airy mousse texture! Then I just spread it on my face and it turns into a lightweight watery moisturiser. It absorbs almost immediately, cooling the skin and deeply hydrating the skin.

This is great in the morning because it replenishes the lost moisture from the harsh air-conditioning. Not only that, it smoothes out any dry patches which help to prep the skin for makeup. It has a very soothing, aromatherapeutic scent which I absolutely love for the morning time!

I’m obsessed with these two products, and if you have sensitive skin or skin that is prone to redness, try them out – I promise you won’t regret it! I think it’s safe to say that the LANEIGE Fresh Calming Toner & Morning Mask has been my top skincare find of 2017 by far! I guess we’ll have to see at the end of the year in my yearly favourites if this has changed 😉

5 Travel Beauty Hacks You Need to Know

I’ve been hit by the Wanderlust bug, hard. I love travelling to different places and being able to understand the interesting stories behind all the gorgeous places. However, travelling comes with the dreaded task of packing. I don’t know about you, but I’m terrible at packing just the necessities, especially when it comes to makeup. I don’t know why or when I’ll need 5 eyeshadow palettes or 13721 lipsticks (just me?) for a week long trip, but I just do. Also, you know that feeling when you’re super excited to finally unpack and leave the hotel room, only to find that the shampoo has spilt over every. freaking. thing? How about uncomfortable flights or having super dehydrated skin and feeling like crap after a long flight? Over the years, I’ve picked up a couple of Travel Beauty Hacks that prevent all that and more, that has made travelling that much more fun and hopefully, it’ll be helpful to you too!

    Bye-bye Liquids, Hello $$$!

This is probably my NUMBER ONE tip! It will save you from any spills, save you a ton of space and even save you money if you don’t need checked luggage. Most of the time, I check in my luggage just so I can bring my liquid products without the 100ml limit. If you can, find solid substitutes for all the liquid beauty products. My favourite place to find these is in none other than one of my favourite stores on Earth, LUSH.

The LUSH Solid Shampoo Bars are my must-have when it comes to travelling. They’re compact, they work so well, they smell freaking amazing and they have a ton of different ones to choose from! My favourites are their Honey I Washed My Hair (their signature Honey I Washed The Kids soap scent) and their Jason and the Argan Oil (Ro’s Argan – sweet rose scent) solid shampoo bars. If you want to save even more space, they have these multi purpose bars called Fun. Fun can be used as a shampoo, soap and also to draw yourself a bubble bath. How fun!

When it comes to skin care, cleansing wipes are really great to pack in place of cleansing waters, oils, etc. They are great at taking off your makeup and to refresh your skin, even when you’re on the plane! My favourite cleansing wipes are by far the Simple Cleansing Face Wipes. I also love packing my go-to cleansing balm, the Banila Co Clean It Zero Sherbet Cleanser, because it can take off even the most waterproof mascara and also, it’s not a liquid which means… no need for checking in my bags!

    Contact Lens Cases!

Many people tend to bring sample sachets for skin care when they travel but I try my best to avoid them. I only bring the products that I’m using at that time so I already know that it won’t break me out or cause an allergic reaction while I’m on holiday. This used to be a problem because skin care products are so big and heavy… until I found this awesome hack! Contact lens cases. All I do is transfer the amount of whatever I need to a contact lens case. Contact lens cases work great for this because you can put different products in a different compartment. 3 contact lens cases are usually enough for my entire skincare routine so that saves me a TON of space when I pack! You can also use this hack for hair oils/serums, and even hair gels and waxes!

Cushion Your Compact Powders With Cotton Pads

This was one that I recently found that saved my makeup! I don’t even know how many compact powders I’ve broken before I found this hack. Thank god I found a super Easy Way to Fix Broken Makeup though! But prevention is always better than cure, right? All you need to do is place a cotton pad or two in your compacts before travelling. You want to place enough to fill up the empty space in the compact, but you also want to make sure it’s not too full that you can’t close your compact securely. This will cushion the powder to keep it safe when travelling!

FREE Perfume Samples or Get a Travalo

Unlike skincare products, I save all my perfume samples so I can bring them when I travel! If you’re from the US, you can actually get free perfume samples from places like Sephora and Nordstrom. If you have a signature scent that you wear religiously, you could always get a Travalo! Travalo is a refillable perfume atomiser that you can fill up with your favourite perfume. I LOVE my Travalo, but if you love trying out new perfumes like me, free perfume samples are definitely the way to go!

Mini Facial on the Plane cause.. why not?

I like to fly with a very minimal amount of makeup on – just my brows and mascara, with a tinted lip balm on my lips. The air on the plane is very drying and can take a toll on your skin, especially on long flights. I love to do a little “mini facial” when I get on the plane just to keep my skin hydrated and bright. I start off by refreshing my skin with a cleansing wipe and then I like to spray on a facial mist. My favourite right now is the mini Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray because it cools, soothes and moisturises my skin at the same time. Then, I like to follow up with a mask. I’ve tried sheet masks and people give me weird looks lol, so I’ve switched over to a sleeping mask instead. Sleeping masks are leave-on heavy duty moisturisers made to withstand the harsh AC at night so it works really well in a flight too! I’m obsessed with the Etude House Bubble Tea Sleeping Pack right now!

Those are some of the unique travel beauty hacks I’ve come across over the years that has really helped me! I hope they are helpful to you too, and maybe they’ll solve a couple of your travel woes! I’d love to know if you have any other travel beauty hacks, so leave them in the comments below! 🙂

Omorose Cosmetics | Homegrown Beauty Treasure

Hi, friends! Today I have reviews of Omorose Cosmetics products for you! I’m really excited to show you guys these products because Omorose Cosmetics is a Malaysian brand and I love supporting local brands. ‘Omorose’ translates to beautiful in ancient Egyptian. Founded in 2014, Omorose Cosmetics products are free of parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, and mineral oil. Not only that, they only use natural preservatives when needed.

Omorose Cosmetics | Malaysian Beauty Treasure

They sent me a ton of stuff to try out – their NEW AINGEAL SPF35 Colour Neutralizers in X Blue & Brown and X Red/Highlighter and their Stylish Gift Set which consists of the BB Stick, Rosey Glow Blush, Satyn Powder, Hypnotic Eyes Eyeshadow, and Lip Dressing. We’ve got a ton to go through, so let’s go ahead and jump right in!

Omorose Cosmetics Aingeal Colour Neutralisers for the Skin

Omorose Cosmetics Aingeal Colour Neutralisers ($40)

Colour correcting has been a huge trend in the beauty blogosphere lately, and I was so excited to try these out! The X BLUE & BROWN one is a coral/salmony colour that as the name suggests, corrects blue & brown tones. Dark circles, blemishes and pigmentations tend to have a bluish/purplish or brown undertone so this is to help cover those. I use this one under my eyes before applying my concealer. The X RED/HIGHLIGHTER one is a yellow colour that cancels out any redness like pimples and rosacea. It can also be used to highlight certain areas of the face.

I have very bad dark circles and my face is also quite red naturally. I like these because they really do help to neutralise those. When I use this, I feel like I can put on a more natural, sheer foundation so I don’t have too much makeup on my skin.

Omorose Cosmetics BB Stick & Satyn Powder

Omorose Cosmetics BB Stick in Fair & Medium ($40)

I love base products that come in stick form because they’re really easy to carry around for touch ups, holidays, etc. However, most of the time they’re pretty dry and hard to apply on the skin. This Omorose BB Stick is actually very creamy and easy to blend into the skin. Because it is a BB Cream though, it doesn’t offer full coverage or a flawless finish. It does however, even out the skin tone well, cover redness and minor blemishes. I find that when I wear this, I have to set with a powder or it’ll just slide off my face after an hour or so. All in all, it’s a great BB Cream, but nothing spectacular in my opinion. BUT my mum has actually been using this BB Stick for about a year now, and she swears by it! My mum does have drier skin though, so this product is probably better for dry skin.

Omorose Cosmetics Satyn Powder in Flawless ($37)

Ahhhh loose powders… the definition of a love-hate relationship. Loose powders give a super smooth finish and doesn’t look cakey but they’re a mess! Because of this, I only tend to use loose powders for baking and setting under my eyes. This Omorose Satyn Powder I have is in Flawless, which is a mattifying powder, but they also have one called Diamond (which again, my mum swears by!) which gives a little bit of a glow to the face. I really like this powder as it is very finely-milled and really does give the skin an airbrushed, flawless finish. It doesn’t look cakey and it bakes beautifully under the eyes and makes my under eyes look smooth and bright.

Omorose Cosmetics Rosey Glow in Pretty Jessica

Omorose Cosmetics Rosey Glow in Pretty Jessica ($23)

Their Rosey Glow Blush is definitely my favourite product out of the whole line! It’s a dome-shaped cream blush that is creamy and blends easily. This one I have is in the shade “Pretty Jessica”. It looks like a super bright hot pink, but it actually applies to the skin very naturally. What I love most about this blush is the finish. It has an almost “translucent” finish on the skin, making it look like I’m blushing naturally. Because of this, even though this is a hot pink shade, it has that translucency that still makes it wearable for every day. Not only is it beautiful and so easy to apply, it lasts for hours on end without fading. Another beautiful colour of this blush is called “Showbiz”. My mum has it, and I steal it quite often :p

Omorose Cosmetics Hypnotic Eyes in Come-to-bed ($20)

The Omorose Hypnotic Eyes are eyeshadows that come in duos, and there are 3 shade choices available. This one I have is called “Come-to-Bed” and it has a light pink and a greyish purple. There is one called “Aishwarya” which is a blue and brown duo. The more wearable one is called “Imagine”, with a gorgeous copper and a light champagne colour. The eyeshadows themselves are very pigmented, creamy and easy to apply. However, I find that it’s hard to get a complete look out of any of these duos because of the shade selection. I’d love it if it came with a matte shade to tie the whole look together, but that’s just personal preference! If you want to pick up one of their Hypnotic Eyes, I’d highly recommend the one in “Imagine”. The copper is beautiful worn all over the lid, with the light champagne as an inner corner highlight!

Omorose Cosmetics Lip Dressing in Watermelon

Omorose Cosmetics Lip Dressing in Watermelon ($13)

Their Lip Dressing is another one that I was super impressed by! The Lip Dressing is a vegan tinted lip balm that adds a pop of colour to the lips. With ingredients like coconut oil, avocado oil, argan oil and Vitamin E, it moisturises my lips and keeps them feeling soft. The thing that surprised me the most was that this is actually very pigmented. I have the Lip Dressing in “Watermelon” which is a gorgeous pinky-red colour. Not only that, this one in particular smells like watermelon too – that’s a plus in my book!

So those were everything I tried out from Omorose Cosmetics! Most of the products I tried are a hit, but if you were to only buy one or two items, I’d highly recommend the Omorose Cosmetics Rosey Glow and their Lip Dressing! If you’re interested in checking out some of their makeup, head on over to their website!

    Nutox Advanced Serum Concentrate

I have a confession to make: I have been sitting here for, I kid you not, ten minutes straight trying to decide what salutation I want to use, to no avail, so we will all just have to sit here with only the knowledge that something is missing to keep us company.

Here is another confession, while we’re at it: the linguist in me is showing; I really want to diagram the above sentence.

If you’re wondering, “Jiawun, why are you bombarding us with so much bullshit today,” that’s because I’m not Jiawun. I’m Jiawun’s extremely digression-prone older sister, Sockwun, pronounced /sɒkwun/ for my fellow linguists and IPA aficionados out there.

Anyway, I’m here to bring you our latest review, a review of the Nutox Advanced Serum Concentrate. Yes, it’s our review because I write for Beauty Nerd by Night now; surprise! I don’t want to digress too much, despite it being my favorite pastime, so let’s jump into the review and leave this new development for my next post.

    nutox advanced serum concentrate

    Nutox Advanced Serum Concentrate (RM79.90/30ml)

In Nutox’s own words, you can:

Defy aging with this newly formulated Nutox Serum Concentrate. This lightweight Serum speeds up the production of the skin’s natural collagen, elastin & hyaluronic acid. Be amazed by its instant & long-term lifting effects. Skin becomes elastic, firmer & smoother.

Let’s break that description down. Nutox claims that its Advanced Serum Concentrate is a lightweight anti-aging serum that can instantly lift your skin, making and keeping it elastic, firm, and smooth. Does it live up to this hype?

    nutox advanced serum concentrate

First and foremost, I have to mention this: the dropper that dispenses the product is quite awkward to use. Because the dispenser is more pump than dropper, it doesn’t always suck enough serum into the tube, so it sometimes takes a couple of pumps to get the five drops you need to cover your face and neck.

That aside, the serum itself is very lightweight, and it absorbs into the skin very easily. When you open up the bottle and dispense the serum onto the back of your hand, which is what I do, you can immediately feel and see that lightweight property in the gel-like serum. Plus, it smells amazing! The scent is floral, reminiscent of roses and jasmine.

“With how lightweight and absorbent this serum is, all I had to do was apply it to the skin. Immediately, I felt my skin tighten and smooth.”

With serums, I usually have to apply it to my face, then dab the product fully into my skin for it to absorb, but with how lightweight and absorbent this serum is, all I had to do was apply it to the skin. Immediately, I felt my skin tighten and smooth. My past experience with other serums has always been that serums, when their effects are immediate, make my skin feel more stretched than tight, if that makes any sense, and it’s uncomfortable. With the Nutox Advanced Serum Concentrate, however, that’s not the case. It smooths as it tightens, so the result is skin that looks firmer.

There is one downside, though: that result doesn’t last very long. I admit that after a few days of using the serum, my face remained tight, firm, and smooth, even after I stopped using it. Unfortunately, the effects didn’t last past those few days.

    PROS:

    ♡ Lightweight

    ♡ Absorbs easily

    ♡ Tightens skin

    ♡ Smooths skin

    ♡ Instant results

    ♡ Smells amazing

    CONS:

♡ Dropper quite awkward to use

    ♡ Effects are not long-term

Tl;dr: The Nutox Advanced Serum Concentrate isn’t bad, but I’m not in love with it. It applies well, absorbs quickly, and tightens without uncomfortably pulling on the skin, but the effects only last as long as you use the product, and I don’t like the idea of having to depend on it for the rest of my life if I want to keep its effects for the rest of my life.

    nutox advanced serum concentrate

What are some of your favorite face serums? Let’s disqus.

    Signing off,

    Sockwun
