What is A Low Shampoo + Why You Need One!

Happy Hump Day! So.. Low Shampoos! What are they? If you have a dry scalp, oily roots, dandruff, hair fall, really dry hair, and many more issues regarding your hair, you’re gonna want to hear this! I’m someone that washes my hair every day because if I don’t, my scalp could probably cook you a sunny side up (gross. Did I just spoil sunny side up eggs for you?). Washing my hair every day (well, and having it bleached twice) has made my scalp dry, gave me oily roots, and a head of hay instead of hair. After discovering low shampoo, my hair was never the same again.. Basically, Low shampoo is what is known as a “no shampoo” shampoo. No kidding. A low shampoo is a “new” type of cleanser for your hair, that doesn’t have harmful chemicals like silicone and sulfates in them.

What is a Low Shampoo + Why You Need One!

Inspired by the “Low Poo/No Poo” (no, not poo poo. yea, they couldn’t come up with a better name) trend, the Low Shampoo is free of silicones and sulfates. The “Low Poo/No Poo” method is, in a nutshell, to use shampoos with no harmful chemicals.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES), Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALS) are surfactants that are typically used in shampoos, toothpaste, soaps, etc. Surfactants used in shampoos are to remove dirt and oil from the scalp. These sulfates are also inexpensive and very effective foaming agents. The use of sulfates in shampoos strips all the natural oil from your scalp, drying it out (hence, dry scalp (hence, dandruff) hence, hence, hence.) and causing your scalp to over-produce oil to combat the dryness (hence, oily roots).

Silicones are used in shampoos to smooth the hair and add shine. Silicone is not one thing – it’s a large group of compounds that end in “-cone”, like methicone, dimethicone, cyclomethicone, and so on. Most silicones are insoluble in water and can build up on your scalp. Silicone can give the hair a conditioned feeling and look, but it’s not actually because your hair is healthy. It’s basically like a layer of plastic that coats your hair and makes it look shiny.

What is a Low Shampoo + Why You Need One!

A low shampoo is like a cleansing cream – it has the consistency of conditioner, and it doesn’t lather up. When I first started using a low shampoo, man was it hard to use. I was so used to a little bit of shampoo coating my entire head of hair because of how well they lather. Because there was no lather, I didn’t feel like it was cleaning my hair. Surprisingly though, after rinsing it off, my hair felt very light, fresh and clean. After a couple of tries, I found that the best way to use a low shampoo is to massage it into the scalp with my fingers in sections. I start at the top of my scalp, then work my way to the sides of my head, toward the lower back of my scalp, and then finally the length of my hair.

The low shampoo that I’m currently using is the Yves Rocher Low Shampoo Delicate Cleansing Cream, and I freaking love it! It’s sulfate-free (duh), silicone-free (yes, Jiawun, that’s the whole point of a low shampoo :|) and also paraben-free. L’Oreal has just come out with two low shampoos which I’ve heard good things about as well. After using low shampoos for half a year now, my hair has never been better! I can finally wash my hair every other day (which, given the hot, humid weather here in Malaysia, is like 4 days) because my scalp doesn’t get as oily anymore. My hair looks much healthier and shinier (and not from silicone!), and feels smooth. Like, I actually have hair now. Not dead grass.

What is a Low Shampoo + Why You Need One!

Why You Need A Low Shampoo, like, rn.

Dandruff is basically flakes of dead skin from your scalp and can cause hair loss. Most of the time, dandruff is caused by a dry scalp. When you use a regular shampoo, the sulfates strip your hair of natural oils, thus drying out your scalp even more, causing more dandruff. So when you use a low shampoo, a different, gentler cleansing agent is used and it doesn’t strip away all the oils.

An oily scalp is usually caused by a dry scalp. You might be going, “Jiawun. That doesn’t make any sense at all.” And yes, that was my initial reaction too. But after some in-depth research (thank the lord (or the founders) for Google), a dry scalp that has been stripped of all it’s oil, will produce even more oil to combat the dryness, just like your skin does! (Wait a minute, isn’t the scalp.. actually just skin? This has happened once when my sister and I were discussing if you should apply lotion to your umm.. as Fergie put it, lovely lady lumps. Or is it completely normal? Have you guys ever thought about it, though? Just me? Okay.)

An overly oily scalp can actually cause dandruff (which causes excessive hair fall) as well. Since there are no sulfates in low shampoos, the scalp will not be overly stripped. The low shampoo will clean the excess oil off your scalp so your hair won’t look or feel greasy, but there will still be natural oils in your scalp that nourishes your hair.

What is a Low Shampoo + Why You Need One!

If you’re in the UK, you can get L’Oreal’s new Low Shampoos on Boots for £5

Low shampoos are a pretty new concept, so it’s a little bit harder to come by. I’ve only seen two brands – Yves Rocher and L’Oreal – come out with them. But I expect them to be a huge trend, especially now that L’Oreal has just released their version. If you come across a low shampoo, definitely try it out! You will see the results in a couple of washes, and your hair will thank you.

Lilac Ash Brown Hair | JeffLee Hair Salon

JeffLee The Hair Company recently contacted me to try out their hair services at their new branch at Uptown PJ. I jumped at the opportunity because I LOVE trying different hair colours and, a hair cut and treatment was long due! Getting to JeffLee Uptown PJ branch was easy, but finding a parking spot was a different story. I ended up parking at a basement parking lot that had a ton of parking spaces, so if you’re thinking of going there.. go straight for the basement! Anyway, on to the actual review of JeffLee Hair Salon services and also my new hair!

Lilac Ash Brown Hair | JeffLee Hair Salon

This is my new hair! I’m obsessed! I told my stylist, Zyon, that I wanted something ashy and I also wanted highlights put in my hair. With that, he created this. This gorgeous lilac ash brown colour that is pretty darn close to my dream hair! I am so in love with how my hair looks now, but it hasn’t always looked like this. Zyon had to do a lot of damage control (haha) to turn it into how it looks in the picture. Brace yourself, guys. I’m about to show you my Before and After..

Yup. That head of hay is what used to be my hair. No kidding. That’s how it looks air-dried – frizzy, patchy, and just overall damaged. You can also tell that my hair needs a hair cut real bad, which is weird, considering I only cut it a month ago. My hair cut was blunt, out-of-shape, and don’t even get me started on the colour (which I also just coloured an ash brown a month ago).

Lilac Ash Brown Hair | JeffLee Hair Salon Lilac Ash Brown Hair | JeffLee Hair Salon

Zyon started by giving me a much-needed hair cut and I think he did an amazing job! I feel like my hair in the after picture looks much longer than the one before. He cut my ends into a beautiful V-shape which elongates my hair to make it look so much longer than it really is. Then, time for the colouring! To prevent adding too much damage to my already damaged hair, he only bleached my hair once. The bleach was only applied because I wanted highlights, so it wasn’t applied to my whole head. Then he concocted a mixture of greys and lilacs and some sort of magic to come up with a lilac ash grey colour, and applied it to my entire head. This makes the highlighted areas a little brighter than the rest of my hair for a more natural look.

Then I got to try out their Korean Hair Spa. Holy moly, this stuff is a miracle. What’s different about the Korean Hair Spa, compared to other hair treatments? Well, it’s called a hair spa because you lie on a hair washing “table” (kind of like a mix between a massage table and the chairs you sit on when they rinse out your hair). First he rinsed out my colour and shampooed my hair. Then, he applied a generous amount of a hair treatment.. Then comes the fun part! Steam actually comes out from the bottom that helps to open the follicles so that the treatment is really effectiely absorbed into the hair. That’s not the only reason it’s called a hair spa though! You actually get a shoulder and back massage too! Coupled with the ambiance, the relaxing music, and the massage – it was one of the most relaxing things ever.

After he blow dried my hair, I was so surprised. My hair felt so soft and looked so smooth – which is something my hair hasn’t been in a long time now. I think the Korean Hair Spa is amazing! Not only did it make my hair so manageable, soft and hydrated, the massages are also super relaxing.

That’s it! I left JeffLee Hair Salon with my hair looking probably a 1000x better than when I walked in. My hair felt so soft and hydrated, and the new colour and cut looked awesome! Overall, my experience at JeffLee Hair Salon at Uptown PJ was a very positive one. I might even get a Korean Hair Spa done once in a month, or something like that.

If you’ve been wanting to get a hair cut and a different colour, I highly recommend JeffLee Hair Salon. Ask for Zyon, and your hair is in safe hands! Even if you’re not looking for a new hair cut, you can pamper yourself with their Korean Hair Spa.

What do you guys think of this colour and cut? And, what is your dream hair colour? I would love to know! Let me know in the comments below 🙂

Irresistible Me Silky Touch Hair Extensions

Irresistible Me Silky Touch Clip-In Hair Extensions
Hi guys! I’ve been trying to grow out my hair to the length it was before I chopped it all off. The last time I had really long hair was about two to three years ago and I really miss it. I love that my mid-length hair is easy to maintain and style, but I really miss how versatile my long hair was – I could curl it, straighten it, put it up in a ponytail, and do lots of updos with it, basically I could have a different hairstyle each day.
It’s probably going to take me quite a while to grow my hair out to how long it used to be, so when Adriana of Irresistible Me contacted me on trying out their products, I chose their Silky Touch Hair Extensions without hesitation! I picked a 200g set of the 20″ Silky Touch Extensions in Medium Brown (#4).
You can choose from their variety of Clip-In Hair Extensions – Silky Touch, Royal Remy, Highlights and more with lengths from 14″ all the way to 22″. You can get sets of 100g, 140g, and 200g. All of their extensions are made from 100%  Remy human hair, and they start at only $59!
Irresistible Me Silky Touch Clip-In Hair Extensions

    Packaging

Everything comes packaged in a gorgeous black box and the actual hair extensions come in two parts, the part with less hair (right) should be opened first so you can test it out and see if the colour goes well with your natural hair. If it doesn’t, you can return it and they’ll exchange it with another colour for you, completely free of charge! But you have to make sure that you don’t open the bigger part or you won’t be able to return it.

    Colour

The colour I got, #4 Medium Brown, is a perfect match for my natural hair. The tips of my hair are a little bit lighter because I dyed it a couple of months back but it’s not too much lighter than my natural hair so it’s all good.

    Quantity

My 200g set came with a total of 10 pieces – one 4-clip, two 3-clips, five 2-clips, and two 1-clips. In my pictures below, I used one 4-clip, one 3-clip, two 2-clips, and two 1-clips. I also want to apologise in advance for the background of the pictures below. I had to add a halftone effect to it because the background was way too noisy. These were taken in my living room, which is the only place that has a window big enough to let light in lol.

    Natural

This is how my hair looks like with just the extensions brushed out and clipped in. It looks quite natural and blends in quite ok, but if you were to really just stare at it, you’ll be able to tell apart my natural hair from the extensions.
I only used slightly more than half of the set, and it’s given me this beautiful volume to my hair. If you have less or thin hair, you can use fewer pieces, and more if you have thick hair.

Irresistible Me Silky Touch Clip-In Hair Extensions | Curled
Irresistible Me Silky Touch Clip-In Hair Extensions | Curled with a hair straightener

    Curled

All the Irresistible Me Hair Extensions can be washed, dried and styled. I think the hair extensions blend the best when they’re curled, but they blend pretty well straight too. The hair extensions look and feel soft and natural. I’ve gotten quite a few compliments and people thought it was my natural hair until I told them that they’re clip-in extensions. I love my Irresistible Me Clip-In Hair Extensions so much! They don’t feel super heavy and they don’t pull on my hair or create that stress on my scalp.
    Pros:
    – Natural-looking
    – Lightweight
    – Easy to clip-in
    – Can be washed, dried and styled
    – Yay I can haz long hair again!
    – Good price
    Cons:
    – I can’t think of any.
I miss my long hair, and my Irresistible Me Silky Touch Hair Extensions has got me covered until my hair finally grows out! They’re clip-on extensions so there’s no commitment in getting extensions put in (I don’t know what it’s called, but it seems scary) at the salon. They feel so nice, and look as if I naturally have gorgeously long and voluminous hair! I’m in love!
Have you guys tried Irresistible Me Hair Extensions? What do you think? Or what do you think of hair extensions in general? Let me know in the comments! 🙂

My Everyday Hair | Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener Review

My Everyday Hair | Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener
My Everyday Hair | Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener
Hi guys! Today I have a post on my everyday hair, which is pretty much just straightening my hair haha. I usually like letting my hair air dry because I don’t want to use a hairdryer and then use a straightener straight after. As you can see in the ‘before’ picture, when my hair dries, it has these weird curves to it and it’s just horrible!
Earlier this month, I posted about the new Philips Kerashine range, and my favourite tool from that collection has to be their Hair Straightener, just because straight hair is the hairstyle that I prefer on a day-to-day basis. Their Heated Curling Brush and their Hair Dryer work just as well! The whole range is amazing because they don’t damage your hair. They have keratin-infused plates that distribute keratin onto your hair when you’re styling. I have a whole blog post explaining the entire thing up if you’re interested 🙂
My Everyday Hair | Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener
The Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener has a wider plate so it takes a shorter time to straighten all your hair. This is especially useful if you have really thick, long hair. It only comes in one heat setting, which is the optimum setting for all hair types. The thing I like most about the “packaging” (can we call it that? lol) is the fact that it has a lock that holds both of the plates together so no dust collects on the surface of the plates.
My Everyday Hair | Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener
What I do is basically just straighten the length of my hair but curl it slightly inward at the tips to create more structure and volume to my hair. The Philips Kerashine Straightener, as you can see in the picture above, smoothes out most of the frizziness of my hair. I really like that it makes my hair look smoother, shinier and definitely healthier.
I like using this Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener for my everyday hair mainly because it doesn’t damage my hair. After using it for almost a month, it didn’t make my hair look any more frizzy, or damaged than it normally is. I don’t know if it makes my hair stronger, like it claims to, but I’m satisfied with it not frying my hair!
The Philips Kerashine Hair Straightener is what I use to style my everyday hair style. What’s your go-to hairstyle everyday and what do you use to create it? 🙂
    Thanks for reading, xoxo

    BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control

I’ve been experiencing hair fall recently and I have no idea why. I go into the shower and wash my hair, comb through some conditioner with my fingers and so much hair comes out! I have been freaking out and the typical hypochondriac me have been googling but surprisingly, to no avail. What I have found though, is that a normal person loses about 50-100 strands of hair in a day, so if that seems to be your count, it’s totally normal! If it’s more than your usual number of hair loss, make sure it’s not due to medical concerns!
    BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control
    BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control

What Are the Common Causes of Hair Fall?

Medical concerns aside, there are many common causes of hair fall. The most common includes hair that is too oily, too dry, or dandruff problems. They are all inter-related, as an oily scalp causes sebum that attracts dust and makes your hair all clump together, resulting in dandruff, that causes hair fall. Dry hair, on the other hand, doesn’t have enough nutrients, or oil and it gets weak, causing hair fall. Sometimes hair fall isn’t even hair fall at all, it’s simply your hair breaking (this is especially true if you have long hair) if your hair isn’t strong enough. If this is the case, try a hair fall control shampoo, like this one I’m reviewing today, the BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control Shampoo. Other reasons include stress, age, and poor diet.
This shampoo couldn’t have come at a better time. I have a super oily scalp, but really dry hair (does that make sense?). What hair fall products generally do (or they promise to) is regulate the production of oil, balance pH levels, and strengthens the structure of the hair to prevent breaking. Does these BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control products do all that?

    BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control

The BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control Shampoo contains all natural and mild hair fall control essences that help stimulate the scalp to to absorb all the nutrients in the shampoo. The nutrients in the shampoo help with hair growth, and help control hair loss and breakage. The BAWANG Ladies Hair Fall Control Conditioner, on the other hand, contains natural ingredients that help to repair and moisturise hair. It replenishes lost nutrients and water, leaving your hair fuller and healthier.

    Does It Work?

The scent of these products are really pleasant. The shampoo has more of a fragrance than the conditioner (which smells a little sour honestly), but it’s a very light and refreshing scent. Starting with the shampoo, it strips the oil off of my scalp and leaves it feeling clean, dry and refreshed. However, it also leaves the rest of my hair feeling super dry. Following it up with the conditioner, however, puts the moisture back into my hair. Since you’re only supposed to apply conditioner on your hair (and not the roots!), it keeps my scalp dry, and the rest of my hair moisturised.
The first thing I noticed after using this was how healthy and soft my hair feels. My hair has become more manageable, and looks shinier. It has definitely regulated my hair oils, and my scalp doesn’t get too oily anymore. As for hair fall control, I can tell that my hair fall has significantly lessened, but it doesn’t completely stop falling out (like I said, the usual 50-100 is fine). I’ll definitely continue to use this just to further strengthen my hair and get my hair to it’s healthiest, and fullest.
If you’ve been experiencing hair fall, or hair breakage, I definitely recommend trying out this product. Even if you don’t have problems with excessive hair fall, I would recommend this if you have long hair, or really dull and weak hair because it really helps smooth out the hair, and strengthen the structure of your hair.
