Summer is now in full force and it’s time to get that goddess glow on! Today I’m sharing one of my favourite DIY recipes that I’ve done to date – my DIY Glow Getter Makeup Setting Spray!
I absolutely love looking glowy throughout the day. I love having a healthy glow to my skin and I usually achieve that with foundations and highlighters. But a lot of the time, glowy foundations can be tricky with oily skin. Because my skin is oily AF, I always need to set my foundation with a powder which takes away all the glowiness ๐ So to remedy that, I made this DIY Glow Getter Makeup Setting Spray that has a little bit of shimmer and pearl to add a gorgeous glow to my skin, which is perfect for the summertime.
This DIY Glow Getter Makeup Setting Spray only requires 4 ingredients! Even though it has a very short ingredient list, three of them are power ingredients that work together to not only set your makeup and give you a healthy glow, but includes a ton of skincare benefits as well.
What you’ll need:
- Rosewater (or you can just use distilled water)
- Aloe vera gel
- Glycerin
- Highlighter of your choice (or eyeshadows, or cosmetic-grade super fine mica)
- Spray bottle (with a fine, dispersed mist)
I made two versions of this, a more natural, pearly one as well as a brightening, pinky-peach one by just variating the highlighter I used. This does require a little bit of sacrifice if you decide to use highlighter or eyeshadow because you’re gonna have to scrape (ouch!) the pan to break them into fine powders.
The 3 Power Ingredients
Rosewater is one of the best skincare ingredients there is. Rosewater moisturises and softens the skin, and is amazing for acne-care. It also helps to boost skin radiance.
Aloe vera gel has a plethora of skincare benefits and it’s an ingredient that I use every single day. It cools down the skin, moisturises it, has antibacterial properties and it also creates a barrier on the skin while keeping your makeup in place.
Glycerin is a natural humectant, which means it draws moisture to your skin to keep it moisturised and hydrated. Glycerin also adds a subtle glow to your skin.
Can I make my own rosewater?
Yep, you sure can! However, homemade rosewater that is made by simmering petals in water has a relatively short shelf life since there is nothing to preserve it. For this recipe, I recommend using a rose hydrosol (which you can also make yourself, Wellness Mama has a great article on it), which is also rosewater, but extracted with a more intricate process and has a longer shelf life.
I was too lazy (heh ๐ ) so I used storebought rosewater (rose hydrosol).
Can I use any aloe vera gel?
Most aloe vera gels are fine to use, but do not use something with fragrance or that has a ton of other additives in it. I use my trusty Nature Republic 92% Aloe Vera Gel (that I’ve talked about in sooo many posts).
I wouldn’t recommend making fresh aloe vera gel from aloe leaves because it has a very short shelf life (only about a week).
Which highlighter should I use?
This setting spray uses a highlighter to give it that shimmery, pearly look. Go for a highlighter that gives a nice glow, instead of the super blinding, shimmery ones. For this DIY Glow Getter Makeup Setting Spray, I used MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Lightscapade (pearl) and Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Rose Quartz (natural, rosy pink).
You can also use any eyeshadows that have a pearly finish. You can experiment with different coloured eyeshadows or highlighters. A gold one would be really pretty as well!
If you’re using cosmetic mica, go for super fine cosmetic micas.
Will this work on oily skin?
Yaasssssss! I have super oily skin and it does an amazing job at keeping my makeup on all day. If you do have oily skin though, don’t add too much glycerin. The perfect amount gives a gorgeous glow, but too much can make your skin look greasy.
Before we get started…
Make sure you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients. Always do a patch test before using the product on your face.
DIY Glow Getter Makeup Setting Spray
Ingredients
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup rose hydrosol (or distilled water)
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- 1 tsp glycerin
- 1-2 tsp highlighter/eyeshadow/mica
You will also need:
- 1 spray bottle
- 1 small funnel
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine rose hydrosol and aloe vera gel. Stir well until the aloe vera gel is completely dissolved.
- Using the small funnel, pour your mixture into the spray bottle.
- Add the glycerin into the bottle using the small funnel. Shake well to combine.
- If using pressed highlighter/eyeshadow, gently scrape the surface of your highlighter/eyeshadow. Then add it into your spray bottle. Shake well to disperse the mica.
How to Use
So I just do my everyday makeup routine and spray this on after all my makeup is done. I use about 3-5 spritz for my entire face and wait for it to dry. It adds a beautiful glow because of the glycerin and a tiny bit of shimmer because of the highlighter.
If you’re not a fan of having shimmer on your skin, you can go ahead and skip adding any highlighters and just use the setting spray as it is. The glycerin is enough to give you a healthy glow by itself. You can also experiment with the amount of highlighter you put in. You could put in the tiniest amount just for a hint of shimmer.
And that’s how to make and use the DIY Glow Getter Makeup Setting Spray! I hope this was helpful and will help you save a ton of $$$. If you try out this recipe, I’d love to know how it worked for you! Let me know in the comments below ๐
